The XYZ Atlas began as the Hedonic Map of Austin. With help from friends and collaborators, we created a growing project that records XYZ coordinates of locations, stories of emotional events, and engages participants through a variety of platforms to give people a way into the project.

Inspirations

The XYZ Atlas began as the Hedonic Map of Austin. Then it grew to consider how to map our experiences in specific places, digitally and through art installations.

In the 1970’s, a psychologist, Robert Plutchik, created a theory of emotions. One of his followers assigned it to a color spectrum, I enhanced the color spectrum and started making an art project out of it. Plutchik’s chart helped me understand emotional wholeness and how to accept and allow all of my feelings and experiences to reveal how they have made me whole, not broken.

With help from friends and collaborators, we created a growing project that records XYZ coordinates of locations, stories of emotional events, and engages participants through a variety of platforms to give people a way into the project.
