It’s funny how a specific location can bring to mind an important memory, such as an epiphany, a new friendship or a broken heart. Whatever the case may be, artist Jennifer Chenoweth has tracked such memories and emotions in The Hedonic Map of Austin, which debuts at the Co-Lab Projects space this month. The artwork, comprised of a full-room indoor installation and an outdoor map on the ground that is made up of text, handmade drawings and paintings from participants, takes people’s emotions and memories and pins them to certain locations, sort of like it would be if one could Google Map his or her life in the capital city. “Austin is not simply a place on a map; we are a community of connected individuals who chose to be here through common values,” Chenoweth says. “We are united through our common experiences, and this project is a way to share and cross-reference those experiences through stories and a sense of place.”
